Significant locations in the battle
Miller's cornfield: At the beginning of the battle, Union attacks and Confederate counter attacks took place in Miller's cornfield and the West woods. Since the troops were at close range and there was heavy artillery fire, Miller's cornfield quickly became full of bodies.
Sunken Road: About midday during the battle, the Union troops pierced the center of the Confederate troops. These troops were located in a sunken road and made a great attempt to hold off Federal troops. After a few hours of intense fighting, the Federal troops were able to take control of the sunken road. Today, the road is known as "Bloody Lane" because of the number of men that were killed there.
Burnside Bridge: Throughout most of the battle, Union troops were trying to cross Burnside bridge (originally known as Rohrbach's bridge) to reach the Confederate right flank. Finally, General Burnside and his troops were able to make their way across the bridge and gained a great advantage at the time for the Union army.
